Check your oven's manual before choosing a cleaner. Smooth enamel, catalytic liners, pyrolytic systems and door glass can need different treatment. Cool the oven before manual cleaning and follow both the appliance instructions and the product label.
Identify the lining first
| Oven or surface | Starting point |
|---|---|
| Standard enamel | Use only a cleaner the manual permits on that surface. |
| Catalytic liners | Do not apply cleaning detergent to the liners. Follow the maker's cleaning-cycle instructions. |
| Pyrolytic oven | Follow the model's self-cleaning procedure, including accessory removal and ventilation. |
| Steam-cleaning function | Use the prescribed water quantity and programme; wipe away loosened dirt once safe to do so. |
| Door glass and seals | Check these separately. A product suitable for the cavity may not suit glass, trim or seals. |
AEG's catalytic-cleaning guidance specifically warns against detergents and abrasive cleaners on catalytic surfaces. Don't generalise instructions from one oven model to another.
Gather suitable supplies
Have soft cloths, a non-scratch sponge approved for the surface, a bowl of water and suitable protection for the floor. Wear the gloves and eye protection required by the cleaner. Keep children and pets away while products are in use.
If the manual does not permit a product or tool, leave it out. Avoid a metal blade on glass and do not use a scraper on a coating unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.
Clean removable racks and trays
- Remove accessories as directed once the oven is cool.
- Check whether the racks are coated or have telescopic runners that need special treatment.
- Use a compatible rack-cleaning method and container. Do not assume a caustic soak bag suits every rack or your bath's finish.
- Follow the product's dilution and contact time; rinse and dry as directed.
Start any permitted soaking before cleaning the cavity so the waiting periods can overlap. There is no single safe soak time for every finish and product.
Clean the cavity
- Switch off the oven and let it cool fully before manual cleaning.
- Remove loose crumbs with a soft brush or cloth.
- Apply a compatible cleaner exactly as its label and the oven manual direct.
- Keep cleaner away from elements, fans, electrical openings, catalytic surfaces and seals unless the manual specifically permits treatment.
- Leave for the stated contact time. Do not use heat to speed it up unless explicitly instructed.
- Wipe and rinse as directed, repeating with clean cloths until product residue has been removed.
- Refit dry accessories and follow the instructions before using the oven again.
For light dirt, a mild method recommended by the maker may be enough. Do not assume a homemade bicarbonate paste is suitable for every surface or provides disinfection. Avoid combining products to create foam: visible fizz does not establish cleaning performance.
Door glass: keep the advice model-specific
Use the method in your manual. Some doors are designed for user removal of an inner pane; others are not. Do not force clips or separate sealed glass. If grease is trapped between inaccessible panes, ask the manufacturer or an authorised technician.
Hot soapy water and a soft cloth may be a suitable first step where the manual permits. Avoid abrasive pads, blades and caustic gel on glass unless the appliance instructions explicitly allow the product and method. Stop if glass is cracked or loose.
How long should you allow?
Separate hands-on work from soaking, cooling and drying. The product label determines the contact time; the amount and type of grease determine how much work remains. Candour has not published measured oven-cleaning timings, so we do not promise a universal 60-minute result.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating catalytic liners like ordinary enamel.
- Applying cleaner to hot surfaces against the label's instructions.
- Spraying into the fan or electrical openings.
- Scratching the glass while removing baked-on patches.
- Leaving cleaning residue behind.
- Taking a door apart without model-specific instructions.
If there is a suspected gas leak or electrical fault, stop using the appliance and follow the relevant emergency or manufacturer guidance. Cleaning is not a repair.
When to pay for help
A lightly soiled oven may be manageable yourself. Consider help for heavy build-up or when the oven forms part of a larger move-out clean. Sealed-door faults and repairs need a technician rather than a cleaning booking.
A single oven is included in Candour's move-out clean. A double oven or range is an upgrade; oven cleaning is optional on a deep clean. See the full inclusions and extras or get a move-out price.
